4 Real-Life Scenarios to Handle Being Let Go

1. ACCEPT Model in Action

Scenario: You’re in a meeting with HR and your manager. They’ve just told you today is your last day.

  • Pause and stay quiet for 5–10 seconds.

    • Even if you're shocked, use silence as strength.

  • Say calmly:

    • “Thanks for letting me know. What are the next steps I should take?”

  • Ask:

    • “Will I receive anything in writing today?”

    • Get clarity on severance, benefits, and exit dates.

  • Privately, write down everything you remember as soon as you’re alone — people forget details in emotional moments.

  • Send one follow-up email that sounds like:

    • “Hi [Manager], can you confirm the timeline, benefits coverage, and anything I should complete?”

  • Accepting isn’t agreeing — it’s choosing strategy over reaction.

2. BRAVE Model in Action

Scenario: You’re walking out after the conversation, and a teammate asks what just happened.

  • Say this (with calm confidence):

    • “I’ve been let go, and while it’s unexpected, I’m using this as a reset. I’ve got a lot of experience I’m proud of, and I’m going to use it to take the next step forward.”

  • Don’t vent, don’t rant. Save your story for people you trust.

  • Later that day, message your team:

    • “Hi team — I wanted you to hear this from me directly: my time here is ending. I’ve learned so much from each of you, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done. If you need anything from me during this transition, I’m happy to help. I’ll stay in touch.”

  • Class isn’t weakness.

  • When you carry yourself with respect during hard moments, you leave a lasting impression.

3. RESET Model in Action

Scenario: You’re at home, it's 2 AM, and you're spiraling through all the “what ifs.”

  • Write one page — just for yourself — titled “What this doesn’t mean.”

    • Examples: “This doesn’t mean I’m a failure.” “It doesn’t mean I’m not talented.”

  • Text a mentor or close friend:

    • “Can we talk sometime this week? I’d love a sounding board. Just got some unexpected news and could use some perspective.”

  • Open LinkedIn and search “recommendation.” Find 3 people to message:

    • “Would you be open to writing a short recommendation for me? I really valued working with you, and it would mean a lot right now.”

  • Before sleeping, tell yourself:

    • “This is not the end of my story. It’s just a weird chapter.”

  • Reframing is not lying to yourself — it’s telling the whole truth, not just the painful part.

4. RISE Model in Action

Scenario: You’re on a Zoom interview for a new job, and they ask: “Why did you leave your last position?”

  • Say with no hesitation:

    • “There was a reorg and my role was impacted. It gave me space to refocus, and now I’m looking for a role where I can do [your strength].”

  • Have your “pivot” story ready. Use a 3-part formula:

    • What happened → What you learned → What you’re aiming for.

    • Example: “I used the time to upskill, reconnect, and get clear on the kind of work I want next.”

  • Later, post on LinkedIn (if comfortable):

    • “I was impacted by layoffs. I’m proud of the work I did and excited for what’s next. If you hear of anything, I’d love to connect.”

  • You don’t need to explain everything — you just need to own your story with confidence.

You don’t need to be loud, outgoing, or on camera every day to build something that earns.

But how do you actually use this? Here are two quick, real-life ways to apply it today:

1. You’ve got old client notes or journal pages collecting dust.
  • Pick one situation where you helped someone solve a problem.

  • Talk it out as a voice note — don’t write, just speak.

  • Drop that into ChatGPT and ask:

    • “Turn this into a 1-page PDF with 3 steps, 1 warning, and 1 action tip.”

  • You now have a mini product that feels real — because it is.

2. You keep staring at a blank LinkedIn post, unsure what to say.
  • Think of one small moment where you fixed something or learned something.

  • Paste that into ChatGPT and say:

    • “Give me 10 simple LinkedIn post ideas based on this story.”

  • Pick one, then say:

    • “Simplify this to sound calm, helpful, and easy to read.”

Here's how you can make it real today:

Step 1: Pick your focus

  • Think back to what’s been hardest so far.

    • Was it the shock? The silence? The pressure to explain?

  • Now choose one mindset that would help you most today:

    • ACCEPT (stay calm, get clear)

    • BRAVE (respond with respect)

    • RESET (rebuild your support)

    • RISE (own your story and move forward)

  • That’s your focus for today.

Step 2: Set your action moment

  • Pick one moment in your day where you’ll act on that mindset:
    — After breakfast
    — Right before sending an email
    — On your walk
    — Before bed

  • Write a note, set a reminder, or just tell yourself:

    • “Today I practice [ACCEPT/BRAVE/RESET/RISE].”

Step 3: Take one clear action

  • Pick one small action tied to your focus. Here are examples:

    • ACCEPT: Write down 3 questions you still need answers to.

    • BRAVE: Write (or send) one thank-you to someone from your team.

    • RESET: Reach out to one person you trust and ask for a quick call or check-in.

    • RISE: Write your 2-line story for why you left — calm, clear, confident.

Don’t overthink it. One step is enough.

Step 4: Notice what changed

  • After your action, pause and ask:

    • Do I feel a little more clear?

    • Did I stop spiraling, even a little?

    • Did this help me take back control?

  • Small actions can shift the day.

Step 5: End with one line

  • Before you sleep, write this:

    • “Today helped because: _____.”
      or

    • “Next time this feels heavy, I’ll try: _____.”

AI Prompt: “Act as a personal guide helping me respond to being let go from my job with clarity, confidence, and direction. Use the following details to help me take one powerful step today.

  • Mindset I’m focusing on: [ACCEPT, BRAVE, RESET, or RISE]

  • What’s been hardest for me so far: [Insert what feels most difficult — e.g., “not knowing what to say,” “feeling embarrassed,” “having no next step,” “dealing with silence”]

  • What I want by the end of today: [Insert goal — e.g., “feel more calm,” “reach out to someone,” “know what to say in interviews,” “write a strong exit message”]

Give me:

  • One small but clear action I can take today that fits my mindset

  • A simple sentence I can say or write if I need to talk about what happened

  • A tip to help me stay grounded and not spiral emotionally

Keep your advice short, clear, and supportive. Use normal words I’d actually say out loud.”

Your title was one part of you — not the whole story.

Getting let go doesn’t erase the work, the effort, or the growth.

People will remember how you showed up, not just how you left.

Leaving well isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being proud of how you handled it.

You may not control the exit, but you control the story from here.

Let it be a story you’d want to tell.

Until next time and with lots of love,

Justin
