Real-World Ways to Apply the 5 Rules and 5 Ps at Work

1. Your Team Is Struggling to Stay Engaged in a Weekly Meeting

Scenario: People stop contributing or attending because meetings feel repetitive and pointless.

  • Start With a Hook:

    • Open the meeting with a surprising fact, a customer story, or a bold question that ties to the main topic.

  • Be Personal:

    • Don’t read slides.

    • Speak casually and directly.

    • Call out individual wins or contributions.

  • Pause With Purpose:

    • After big points, pause.

    • Silence draws people back in and lets your message land.

  • Purpose (5Ps):

    • Tell people up front: “This meeting matters because…”

    • Keep the agenda laser-focused.

  • Punch (5Ps):

    • Finish by asking everyone for one sentence of takeaway.

    • It makes them listen differently.

2. You’re Pitching a New Idea to Leadership

Scenario: You have only 10 minutes to convince execs to fund your project.

  • Start With a Hook:

    • Lead with a bold statement like, “This will save us $100K a year” or “This fixes our #1 customer complaint.”

  • Ditch the Script:

    • Memorize your key ideas, not the whole speech.

    • Talk to them, not at them.

  • Energy (Focus Zone):

    • Match your voice and style to the excitement or seriousness of your proposal.

  • Preparation (5Ps):

    • Anticipate their top 3 questions and have your answers ready.

  • Punch (5Ps):

    • End with one killer takeaway they can’t ignore: “This makes us faster, cheaper, and easier to work with.”

3. You’re Training New Employees

Scenario: You must explain complex processes but keep people engaged.

  • Be Personal:

    • Share quick personal mistakes and lessons.

    • People remember stories.

  • Pause With Purpose:

    • After explaining each step, stop and ask: “What’s not clear yet?”

  • Adaptability (Focus Zone):

    • If people look confused, change your approach fast.

    • Switch from slides to a live demo.

  • People (5Ps):

    • Don’t just teach. Connect.

    • Start by asking about their goals or experience with the topic.

  • Presence (5Ps):

    • Put your phone away.

    • Be fully available for questions and side discussions.

4. You’re Leading a High-Stakes Client Call

Scenario: Your client is upset or losing trust.

  • Be Personal:

    • Drop the formal talk.

    • Speak like a human.

    • Say “You’re right to be frustrated” or “I get why this feels slow.”

  • Ditch the Script:

    • Have talking points, but respond naturally to what they say.

  • Presence (Focus Zone):

    • Listen closely.

    • Clients notice when you’re distracted.

  • Preparation (5Ps):

    • Have data ready to back up your points but use it to serve the conversation, not dominate it.

  • Punch (5Ps):

    • Close with a clear next step: “Here’s exactly what happens next and when.”

5. You’re Giving a Company-Wide Presentation

Scenario: You’re presenting company updates to 100+ employees.

  • Start With a Hook:

    • Surprise them: Share an unexpected win, customer story, or bold future goal.

  • Be Personal:

    • Avoid corporate speak.

    • Talk like you would to a friend over coffee.

  • Energy (Focus Zone):

    • Use voice changes, hand gestures, and movement to keep attention.

  • Purpose (5Ps):

    • Tell them why this matters: “This update directly affects your work and growth.”

  • Punch (5Ps):

    • Leave them with one memorable idea: “We’re not just meeting goals—we’re setting new standards.”

Here's how you can make it real over the next 4 days:

Day 1 – Write the Thing You’ve Been Avoiding
  • You’ve been holding back something you need to say at work.

  • Pick your focus:

    • Choose 1 of the 5 lessons you want to work on.

  • Write 1 sentence:

    • Say what needs to be said. Don’t send it. Just write it.

  • Example:

    • “I need to tell them I understand why they’re frustrated.”

    • “I need to explain why this project is behind without making excuses.”

  • Why:

    • Clear words lower anxiety. Silence makes things worse.

  • AI Prompt: “Act as a professional coach. I need to say something honest at work but I’ve been avoiding it. Here’s my situation: (insert short description). Help me write 1 respectful sentence that feels real, not defensive.”

Day 2 – Watch Yourself
  • You want to know how you really sound and look when speaking.

  • Record yourself:

    • Talk for 2–3 minutes on any topic. Play it back.

  • Listen for:

    • Clarity, energy, and pace. Don’t judge—just notice.

  • Why:

    • You can’t change what you don’t hear or see.

  • AI Prompt: “Act as a communication coach. I just recorded myself speaking about (insert lesson chosen). Give me 3 simple things to listen for so I can sound clearer and more confident next time.”

Day 3 – Get Outside Feedback
  • You’ve practiced alone, now it’s time to involve someone else.

  • Pick a partner:

    • Friend, co-worker, or family member.

  • Share your talk:

    • Ask for 1 thing they liked and 1 thing to work on.

  • Why:

    • Fresh eyes and ears help you improve faster.

  • AI Prompt: “Act as a speaking coach. I’m practicing (insert lesson chosen) with a friend today. Give me 3 easy ways to ask for feedback so it feels natural and helpful for both of us.”

Day 4 – Apply It in Real Life
  • Time to use what you’ve practiced in a real situation.

  • Pick your moment:

    • A meeting, phone call, or casual chat.

  • Use your focus:

    • Apply the lesson you picked on Day 1.

  • Why:

    • Real practice is the only way to build confidence.

  • AI Prompt: “Act as my speaking coach. I have a (insert real situation: meeting, call, presentation, etc.) today where I want to apply (insert lesson chosen). Help me write 1 strong opening sentence that will help me start well and feel ready.”

Your voice is a tool—use it well.

You don’t need to be perfect to be powerful.

You just need to be clear, honest, and present.

Every time you speak, you have a chance to connect.

Confidence isn’t about volume—it’s about meaning.

And meaning comes from saying what matters.

Your voice has weight.

Use it with care.

Until next time and with lots of love,

Justin
