Real-Life Ways to Lead by Serving

1. Help Your Team Grow

Scenario: A team member keeps asking for approval on every task, afraid of making mistakes.

  • Step back from micromanaging.

    • Say:

      • “You don’t need my sign-off on these. I trust your call. If something goes off-track, we’ll fix it together.”

  • Give a stretch assignment.

    • Pick a slightly harder task and say:

      • “I think you're ready for this. It might push you a bit, but I’ll be here if you get stuck.”

  • Let them teach someone else.

    • Say:

      • “Can you walk Anna through how you handled that last project? It’s a great way to lock in your own learning too.”

  • Ownership builds confidence, and teaching others is the fastest way to grow yourself.

2. Build Accountability

Scenario: A project failed, and people are finger-pointing or staying silent.

  • Go first.

    • In a team meeting, say:

      • “Here’s where I dropped the ball. I should have asked for updates sooner.”

  • Make reflection normal.

    • Ask:

      • “What’s one thing we could each do differently next time?” (Have everyone answer briefly)

  • Create visible agreements.

    • Use shared docs or a Slack thread to write down:

      • “Who’s doing what by when” — And check back in openly next week.

  • When you model owning your part, others feel safe to do the same.

3. Care for Well-being

Scenario: Someone’s performance suddenly drops, and they’re more withdrawn.

  • Check in with care, not pressure.

    • Say privately:

      • “I noticed you’ve been quieter lately. Everything okay? No pressure to share if it’s personal — just know I’m here.”

  • Offer small work adjustments.

    • Say:

      • “If you need to shift deadlines or skip a few calls this week, let me know. Your health comes first.”

  • Follow up without pushing.

    • Even 3 days later, just say:

      • “Still thinking of you. Anything you need, or just want to talk?”

  • People don’t forget how you showed up when things were hard. Small kindnesses = deep trust.

4. Value Your Team

Scenario: Your team just hit a goal — and the instinct is to move on to the next task.

  • Pause and reflect together.

    • Say:

      • “Before we move forward, I want each of us to share what we’re most proud of from this.”

  • Make praise personal.

    • Instead of “great job team,” say:

      • “Nina — the way you jumped in midweek and fixed the email flow saved the launch. That mattered.”

  • Create a team ‘wins’ wall.

    • Use a shared doc, whiteboard, or Slack channel to log small wins every week.

  • People stay longer and work harder when they feel seen — not just useful.

The best offers don’t just fix a problem.
They remove the pressure to get started.

Before someone buys, they’re usually not stuck because they’re lazy or unsure — they’re stuck because getting started feels messy. Unclear. Like work.

So here’s the offer idea most people skip:
Build something that helps people take the first step — not the whole journey.

What That Looks Like:

  • Instead of a 6-module course → offer a 1-page quickstart checklist

  • Instead of a full coaching package → offer a 20-minute self-assessment

  • Instead of a whole system → offer a shortcut that saves time or stress

These offers sell because they don’t ask for a big commitment.
They just say: “Here’s how to move forward today.”

Try This Prompt:

Ask yourself:
“What’s something people want to do… but keep putting off?”
Now build a tiny tool that helps them do just that first step.

Here’s How to Build It Inside creatyl:

  • Upload a single-page guide, tool, or tracker

  • Add a short walkthrough video to explain it

  • Launch it instantly with a simple storefront (no tech setup)

  • Use your dashboard to see who’s viewing, buying, and clicking

This kind of micro-offer can unlock a flood of momentum —
for your buyers and for you.

Here's how you can make it real today:

Daily Servant Leadership Challenge

Step 1: Pick Your Focus

  • Choose one of these leadership practices you want to work on today:

    • Help your team grow, build accountability, care for well-being, or value your team.

  • Don’t overthink it. Go with what feels most needed right now.

  • Example:

    • “Someone on my team seems quiet lately” → care for well-being

    • “Our deadlines keep slipping” → build accountability

Step 2: Spot a Real Moment

  • Look ahead in your day — where will there be a chance to show up as a leader?

    • During a check-in

    • When giving feedback

    • While messaging about a deadline

    • When someone looks frustrated or stuck

  • Pick one real, likely moment. No need to wait for something big.

Step 3: Do One Simple Thing

  • In that moment, take one action tied to your focus.

  • Examples:

    • Help them lead: “I trust you to handle this how you think is best.”

    • Show care: “You’ve had a lot going on — want to shift anything today?”

    • Make work visible: “Can I share your idea in the team meeting?”

    • Create clarity: “Can we agree on what done looks like before we start?”

  • Keep it short. One move is enough.

Step 4: Notice the Response

  • After the moment, quietly reflect:

    • Did their tone or energy shift?

    • Did they seem more confident, calm, or clear?

    • Did anything feel different about how the team moved forward?

  • Even small actions can start a change.

Step 5: Log the Impact

  • At the end of the day, finish this thought in your notes:

“Today, I focused on [Lesson]. I [What You Did]. It led to [What You Noticed].”

  • Example:

    • “Today, I focused on accountability. I asked a teammate to define their own deadline. It led to them owning it right away.”

  • This is how leadership gets better — one real moment at a time.

AI Prompt: “Act as a leadership coach. Help me prepare for one real moment today where I can lead with intention by making someone’s day easier.

Here’s my focus area: [Insert one: “Help someone grow”, “Care for well-being”, “Build accountability”, or “Show appreciation”]
Here’s what I know about the person or moment: [Insert any details you have — e.g., “They’ve been overwhelmed”, “We have a check-in at 3pm”, “They did something great last week”]

Create:

  • A simple action I can take today during that moment

  • Exact words I could say or message to them

  • One follow-up question I could ask to stay connected

  • One thing I should watch for to see how it landed

Keep the wording casual, supportive, and real — something I’d actually say at work.”

Real leadership isn’t about being in charge.

It’s about how you carry yourself when no one’s watching.

How you show up when someone’s struggling.

How you react when things don’t go your way.

How often you ask, “What would help you today?”

And, because of that, people show up stronger every day.

Until next time and with lots of love,

Justin
