6 Real-World Examples of Servant Leadership in Action
1. Empowering Team Members
Scenario: A project manager notices that a team member has potential but lacks confidence in leading meetings.
Steps:
The manager encourages this team member to lead the next meeting, providing guidance and support beforehand.
After the meeting, they discuss what went well and areas for improvement.
The team member gains confidence and develops leadership skills, benefiting both their personal growth and the team's effectiveness.
2. Active Listening
Scenario: An employee feels overwhelmed with their workload but hesitates to speak up.
Steps:
The leader regularly checks in with team members and creates a safe space for open communication.
Upon learning about the employee's situation, the leader listens without interrupting and acknowledges their feelings.
The employee feels heard and valued, leading to a discussion about workload distribution and potential solutions, which improves their well-being and productivity.
3. Providing Resources for Development
Scenario: A team member wants to learn a new software program to improve their performance but lacks access to training.
Steps:
The leader arranges for the necessary training materials or enrolls the employee in a relevant course.
The team member acquires new skills, increasing their efficiency and contributing more effectively to the team's goals.
4. Recognizing and Celebrating Achievements
Scenario: A team has worked hard to complete a challenging project ahead of schedule.
Steps:
The leader acknowledges the team's effort in a meeting and sends a thank-you note to each member, highlighting their specific contributions.
The team feels appreciated, which improves morale and motivates them to maintain high performance.
5. Encouraging Collaboration
Scenario: Departments within a company operate in silos, leading to duplicated efforts and miscommunication.
Steps:
The leader organizes inter-departmental workshops to encourage knowledge-sharing and collaborative problem-solving.
Teams begin to work together more effectively, leveraging each other's strengths and improving overall organizational efficiency.
6. Leading by Example
Scenario: A company is going through a period of change, causing uncertainty among employees.
Steps:
The leader remains transparent about the changes, maintains a positive attitude, and continues to uphold the company's values.
Employees feel reassured and are more willing to adapt to the changes, maintaining productivity and morale.

Empathy
A team I newly became manager of years ago with was dealing with low morale and high frustration.
They were under pressure to meet deadlines, but executive eadership was unaware that some employees were struggling with personal challenges, burnout, and overwhelming workloads.
Productivity was dropping, and mistakes were increasing.
I took the time to have one-on-one conversations with team members, asking how they were really doing—not just about work, but about their overall well-being.
I listened without interrupting or rushing the conversation.
Many felt unheard and exhausted, so I relayed this feedback to executive leadership and helped them adjust expectations.
Executive leadership agreed to redistribute some tasks, allow for more flexible deadlines, and implement short breaks during high-stress projects.
Team members felt valued and understood, which improved morale and performance.
Simply acknowledging their struggles and making small adjustments had a big impact on their motivation and results.

Here's how you can make it real over the next 4 days:
Day 1: Self-Assessment
Choose a Servant Leadership lesson you want to work on this week.
Reflect on your current abilities related to your chosen lesson.
Spend 15 minutes writing about situations where you've applied this skill and areas where you feel improvement is needed.
AI Prompt: "You are an expert leadership coach. Help me reflect on my current abilities in [chosen skill]. What are my strengths, and where do I struggle? Give me key questions to ask myself so I can get a clear picture of where I stand."
Day 2: Set a Specific Goal
Define a clear, achievable objective to increase your chosen skill.
For example, if focusing on active listening, aim to fully listen during conversations without interrupting.
AI Prompt: "You are a leadership strategist. I want to improve my [chosen skill]. Help me set a clear, achievable goal that I can measure. Give me a step-by-step plan to work on this skill in a way that fits into my daily routine."
Day 3: Apply the Skill
Put your chosen skill into practice in a real-world scenario.
Engage in a conversation or meeting where you consciously apply the skill, such as listening attentively or expressing empathy.
AI Prompt: "You are a workplace performance expert. Today, I need to practice [chosen skill] in real situations. Give me three practical ways I can use this skill during my conversations, meetings, or daily tasks today."
Day 4: Reflect and Plan Ahead
Evaluate your experience and plan for continued growth.
Write about what you learned, challenges faced, and how you can continue to develop this skill moving forward.
AI Prompt: "You are an expert in professional growth. Help me evaluate how I have applied [chosen skill] over the past three days. What should I reflect on to measure my progress? Based on what I’ve learned, what should I do next to keep improving?"

A title does not make someone a leader. Their actions do.
The best leaders listen more than they speak.
Respect is not demanded. It is earned through service.
True leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.
The impact of leadership is not seen in words but in the success of others.
The most effective leaders are the ones willing to stand behind their team, not just in front of them.
Until next time and with lots of love,
Justin
