Really Being Prepared

I found myself sitting nervously in the reception area, waiting for my first big interview right before college graduation.

I had applied for a position I really wanted, but the thought of unpredictable interview questions was making my palms sweat.

I was terrified of freezing up and not having the right answers.

To combat this, I dedicated the week before to thorough preparation.

I started by researching the most commonly asked interview questions, and then I deep-dived into the specific ones related to my field.

I crafted answers that showcased my skills and aligned with the company's values, then practiced them with a friend who gave honest feedback.

During practice, I timed my responses to ensure they were concise and to the point.

I even recorded myself to observe my body language.

I also made a list of questions for the interviewer, which demonstrated my interest in the company and the role.

When the interview came, I was ready.

Each time a question was posed, I recognized it from my preparation.

This familiarity bred confidence, and I found myself answering with a composed demeanor and a clear voice.

My practiced stories highlighted my achievements and fit with the job's requirements.

Not only did I answer their questions with ease, but I also engaged the interviewers with my own thoughtful questions.

The preparation paid off—I walked out of the interview knowing I had done my best.

A few days later, not only did I get the job, but I also got the highest salary offer in my entire graduating class.

Again - you get the most money by being the most prepared, not by being the smartest.

Here's how you can make it real over the next 4 days:

Day 1: Self-Reflection and Research

  • List your top five professional achievements and how they align with the job you're interviewing for.

  • Spend at least one hour researching the company's mission, values, and recent news.

  • Write down how your skills and values match with the company.

    • ChatGPT Prompt to Help: "Help me list my top professional achievements that best align with [specific job position] at [company name], here is a copy of my resume [insert your resume]. Also, assist me in conducting research on [company name] to understand their mission, values, and recent news that I should be aware of.”

Day 2: Answer Crafting and Strength Identification

  • From your research yesterday, draft answers to the classic questions "Tell me about yourself" and "Why do you want to work here?"

  • Be sure to include your strengths that are relevant to the job description.

  • Practice them out loud twice.

    • ChatGPT Prompt to Help: "I have an interview for a [job title] at [company name]. Based on this job description [insert job description] and the company's core values, help me draft personalized answers for 'Tell me about yourself' and 'Why do you want to work here?' that include my strengths."

Day 3: Weaknesses and Scenario Preparation

  • Identify a professional weakness and a related skill you’ve improved.

  • Develop a response to "What is your greatest weakness?" that shows this progression.

  • Also, create and rehearse an answer to a situational question like "Tell me about a challenge you faced and how you dealt with it."

    • ChatGPT Prompt to Help: "I need to articulate a professional weakness and demonstrate how I've been working on it for my upcoming interview. Help me create an answer that showcases growth and improvement. Additionally, guide me in formulating a response to a situational interview question about a challenge I've faced. Here are some examples of my growth and improvement [insert examples here]. Here are some examples of challenges I have faced [insert challenges here]."

Day 4: Mock Interview and Attire Selection

  • Conduct a mock interview with a friend or mentor using the answers you’ve crafted.

  • Afterward, choose and lay out your interview attire, making sure it’s clean, fits well, and is appropriate for the company culture.

    • This may seem “silly” to some, but you want to get this right!

      • ChatGPT Prompt to Help: "I've prepared responses for common interview questions and would like to run through a mock interview session. Play the role of the interviewer and provide feedback on my responses. Here are the questions and my responses [insert questions and responses]."

The interview process is a learning experience.

Regardless of the outcome, you will emerge with greater knowledge, insight, and self-awareness.

Confidence comes from preparation.

Approach each interview with the understanding that it's not just about what you've done.

But what you can do.

Every question is an opportunity.

Until next week and with lots of love,

Justin
