How to Actually Stay Calm Under Pressure

1. Dealing with a coworker who makes passive-aggressive comments in meetings

Scenario: You’re in a team meeting when a colleague makes a sarcastic remark about your work.

  • Defuse the Situation:

    • Pause before replying.

    • Take a breath and redirect your attention to the agenda.

  • Acknowledge Their Words:

    • Say calmly, “I heard your point.”

    • Avoid sarcasm or escalating the tone.

  • Set Clear Boundaries:

    • After the meeting, say privately, “I prefer to keep feedback direct and respectful.”

  • Shift Focus:

    • Get the meeting back on track by returning to the action items or task at hand.

2. Receiving unfair blame from your manager in front of others

Scenario: Your manager blames you for a missed deadline, though the delay wasn’t your fault.

  • Defuse the Situation:

    • Say nothing in the moment.

    • Take a breath and stay calm.

  • Acknowledge Their Words:

    • Later, say, “I understand this is frustrating.”

  • Set Clear Boundaries:

    • Add, “For future deadlines, I’d like to talk earlier if things are off track.”

  • Shift Focus:

    • Redirect to how the team can stay aligned moving forward.

3. Handling a client who speaks to you disrespectfully on a call

Scenario: A client raises their voice and makes critical remarks during a project update.

  • Defuse the Situation:

    • Respond with, “Let’s pause for a moment. I want to make sure we’re aligned.”

  • Acknowledge Their Words:

    • Say, “I understand this is frustrating.”

  • Set Clear Boundaries:

    • “I’m here to help, but I expect our conversation to stay respectful.”

  • Shift Focus:

    • Guide the call back to the solutions you’re working on together.

4. Being interrupted or spoken over in meetings

Scenario: You try to contribute during a meeting, but someone repeatedly cuts you off.

  • Defuse the Situation:

    • Pause, then gently say, “Please let me finish that thought.”

  • Acknowledge Their Words:

    • Nod or reference their point without stepping back entirely.

  • Set Clear Boundaries:

    • Say, “I’d like to be heard before we move on.”

  • Shift Focus:

    • Wrap your point and suggest the next step or question.

5. Getting a harsh email late at night

Scenario: You receive an angry message outside work hours criticizing your performance.

  • Defuse the Situation:

    • Don’t respond right away. Wait until the next workday.

  • Acknowledge Their Words:

    • Start your reply with, “Thanks for your feedback—I’ve taken time to think about it.”

  • Set Clear Boundaries:

    • Add, “Going forward, I’d like to have these conversations during business hours.”

  • Shift Focus:

    • Close with how you’ll adjust or clarify expectations moving forward.

You don’t need to yell to be heard.

You don’t need to win the moment to lead it.

Staying respectful when disrespected doesn’t make you weak.

It means you’re clear about who you are and what you allow.

It means you protect your peace without losing your voice.

Your silence, your pause, your tone — they all speak for you.

Every choice not to react is a decision to lead with clarity.

Until next time and with lots of love,

Justin
